A senior living advisor is an individual who has a deep understanding and appreciation for seniors, their families and the unique set of challenges that accompany the later decades of life. A senior living advisor always puts the best interest of the senior first knowing that in some cases, what is in their best interest isn’t always what they prefer. A senior living advisor, particularly one who is a Certified Senior Advisor, will have a broad understanding of the health, social and financial issues that are important to seniors, and how these issues affect their lives. They also are very familiar with community based resources and can connect the senior and their family with them.
Most importantly, a senior living advisor needs to fully understand and appreciate how to best communicate with elders and build effective and meaningful relationships. Senior living advisors are nurses, clergy, social workers, financial experts and people who work inside of senior living communities.
Some tips that may help you know if you should contact a senior living advisor include:
-A diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s
-A desire to move from their home into an independent or assisted living community
-When you begin to worry if they are safe to be at home alone
-When you have questions about long-term care insurance or need to assign a power of attorney
-After a significant health event, fall, stroke or broken bone
-If you sense your loved one may be suffering from depression or has become isolated
The senior living advisor should be able to perform a thorough assessment of your loved one and their current situation and then make recommendations based on the needs and wishes of both you, the senior and what is in their best interest. Most often there will be more than one option available and the senior living advisor can then connect you with the services you need. This can be everything from in-home care services, an elder care attorney or even helping you choose the best and safest senior living community, all while keeping you and your loved one’s needs at the forefront of all they do.
